Few artists deserve the description “Renaissance man” as Michael Nyman, the British writer, musicologist, photographer, pianist and composer who is constantly on the quest for new horizons. Credited with the birth of the minimalist movement in music, Nyman –the man behind The Piano’s iconic soundtrack – premieres at the festival with a concert celebrating the 40 years of the Michael Nyman Band. The Band was formed in 1976 for the production of a play by Carlo Goldoni and it has since served as a vehicle for productions that include works for orchestra, chamber music, operas and, very significantly, the creation of scores for Peter Greenaway’s films such as The Draftsman’s and Prospero’s Books. A special anniversary concert, thus, in which Nyman will review chronologically his works for the Michael Nyman Band and will also premiere new pieces. This special musical anthology will undoubtedly confirm that Nyman is still one of the most fascinating musical icons of our time.
